Translating Transitive Verbs that Cannot be Passivized: An Effective Way to Learn

Translating Transitive Verbs that Cannot be Passivized: An Effective Way to Learn

DOI : 10.23903/kaited.2023.21.4.010

Since its first introduction, Machine Translations (MT) have frequently been applied to EFL learners. MTs were often used as supplementary tools for self-study writing tools. Previous studies also revealed that the translation method was effective in teaching certain target grammar such as the passive voice and the sentence patterns. However, EFL learners often found it difficult to simply memorize the transitive verbs that cannot be passivized. The translation method was introduced to the students. Results show that the target verbs were improved with the translation method and EFL learners had positive views about this self-study tool. However, as the learners were already well aware of the non-target transitive verbs, meaningful changes did not occur with the translation method. Further survey revealed that translations of the transitive verbs helped them understand why it was not necessary to change such verbs into passive voice in the first place. Survey revealed that MTs could not only provide immediate correction but also provide an effective tool for practicing such difficult exceptions in English grammar.
