Functions and Effects of Character Songs in a Musical ＜My Fair Lady＞

본 연구는 뮤지컬 ＜마이 페어 레이디(My Fair Lady)＞ (1956)에 나타난 캐릭터 송(Character song)의 기능과 효과를 탐구하기 위해 수행되었다. 뮤지컬에서 캐릭터 송은 인물 표현뿐 아니라 다양한 기능을 통해 뮤지컬에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 ＜마이 페어 레이디＞에 나타난 주요 캐릭터들의 캐릭터 송을 선정하여 각각의 기능과 효과를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 캐릭터 송은 음악과 가사의 조합을 통해 캐릭터의 개성과 성격을 표현하고 인물의 가치관, 정체성, 욕망, 결핍 등을 다루고 있었다. 또한, 캐릭터의 내적 상태와 감정을 강조하고 표현하면서 관객과의 감정적인 연결을 형성하여 공감을 일으키는 중요한 역할을 하고 있었다. 그 외에도 캐릭터 송은 캐릭터의 성장과 변화를 표현하 면서 이야기의 전환점을 제공하기도 하는데, 전체적인 이야기 흐름과 진행에 기여하고 있음을 찾아볼 수 있었 다. 이러한 연구 결과는 ＜마이 페어 레이디＞ 작품 외다른 뮤지컬 작품에서도 캐릭터 송의 기능과 효과에 대한 이해와 정보를 제공하며, 예술 연구와 뮤지컬 연구 분야에 새로운 지평을 열 수 있는 중요한 연구 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

This study was performed to investigate the functions and effects of the character songs in a musical, ＜My Fair Lady＞(1956). Character songs play an important role in the musical not only by expressing the characters but also by multiple functions. To do so, character songs of the main characters in ＜My Fair Lady＞ were selected and the functions and effects of them were analyzed. The analysis results revealed that the character songs expressed their individuality and personality and dealt with the value, identity, desire, lack, and so on. In addition, they played the important role of sympathy by highlighting and expressing the inner state and feeling of the characters and developing the emotional bondage with the audience. Besides, the character songs provided the turning point of the story by expressing their growth and changes, which contributed the overall flow and progression of the story. These results would offer the understanding and insight on the functions and effects of the character songs in other musicals beside ＜My Fair Lady＞, and be utilized as the crucial reference to open the new area in the studies of the arts and musical.
