A Study on the Comparison of Plural Place Names in Inland and Coastal Areas

이 논문은 내륙지역인 영동군과 해안지역인 태안군의 복수지명들을 그 유형과 조어방식에 따라 대비해서 상호간에 어떠한 차이점이 있는지를 살피고 공통점은 또 무엇이 있는지를 찾았다. 그리하여 공통점 중에서는 한국어 복수지명의 일반적 특성이라 할 만한 것은 무엇인지 밝히고자 하였다. 이러한 목적을 이루기 위해 먼저 의미영역 별로 복수지명들을 대비하였고, 한 지점 당 복수지명의 개수가 몇 개까지로 이뤄지는지 그 양적 순위를 대비하였으며, 복수지명의 유형과 조어방식 양상에 따라 대비함으로써 두 지역 간에 어떠한 차이점과 공통점이 있는지를 밝혀 내었다. 두 지역 간 복수지명 분포의 대비를 통해서 확인한 큰 차이점들이라면, 의미영역별 대비에서 영동에는 없고 해안지역의 특성이 반영된 [섬]의 복수지명이 태안에는 [마을] 다음의 두 번째로 많았다는 것이고, 영동에 비해 태안은 복수지명의 조어가 훨씬 활발했다는 것이다. 두 지역의 공통점에서 얻은 한국지명의 일반적인 사실이라 할 만한 것들은 다음과 같다. 첫째는 복수지명의 의미영역에 있어서 [마을]에 가장 많이 분포해 있다는 사실이고, 둘째는 한 지점당 복수지명의 개수가 2개인 경우가 가장 많다는 사실이며, 셋째는 복수지명 중에는 고유지명의 한자화에 따라 조어된 것이 가장 많았다는 사실이다.

This paper compared the plural place names of Yeongdong-gun, an inland region, and Taean-gun, a coastal region, according to their types and formation methods, and examined what differences and commonalities there are in the plural place names of inland and coastal regions. Therefore, among the commonalities, we would like to reveal what can be considered general characteristics of plural place names in Korean. Therefore, we sought to reveal what, among the commonalities, are the general characteristics of Korean plural place names. To achieve this purpose, we first compare plural place names by semantic area, and compare the quantitative ranking of the number of plural place names per point. In addition, by comparing the types of plural place names and word formation methods, we reveal what differences and commonalities there are between the two regions. The differences identified through the comparison of the distribution of multiple place names between the two regions are as follows. In comparison by semantic area, the plural place name of [island], which does not exist in Yeongdong and reflects the characteristics of the coastal area, was the second most common in Taean after [village]. And compared to Yeongdong, the creation of plural place names was much more active in Taean. By comparing the distribution of plural place names between the two regions, we were able to find out the following general facts about Korean place names. The first is that plural place names are most widely distributed in the semantic area [village]. Second, the fact is that in most cases there are two plural place names at one location. Thirdly, the majority of plural place names were based on Chinese characters for proper place names.
