「上善若水」의 은유적 의미

A Metaphorical Meaning of “Supreme Virtue is like the Water「上善若水」”

물은 인간으로 하여금 자신의 삶을 되돌아보고, 지혜로운 삶이란 어떤 것인가를 탐구하게 한다. 노자도 마찬가지로 「上善若水」라는 도를 은유하는 명제를 가지고 물의 다양한 형태의 속성에 대해 구체적인 의미를 부여함으로써 지혜의 길을 열어주려 했던 것으로 보인다. 물은 늘 자연의 이치와 법도에 따라 ‘利萬物ㆍ處下ㆍ不爭’함으로써 ‘자애(慈)ㆍ줄임(儉)ㆍ천하의 앞이 되려하지 않음(不敢爲天下先)’을 잘 실천하기 때문에 허물이 없다. 강과 바다가 모든 골짜기의 왕이 될 수 있는 것은 겸허히 잘 낮춤으로 인하여 그와 다투려는 자가 없고, 오염되면 정화하고 막히면 형체를 변화하면서까지 다투려 들지 않으니 그와 다툴 자가 없는 이 경지가 바로 최선의 경지인 것이다. 통치자가 만약 이러한 물의 경지를 지켜 행할 수 있다면 하늘과 땅은 서로 화합하고 온 천하가 자연스러움으로 돌아가게 될 것이다. 통치자가 나라를 다스리는데 혹은 인간이 자신을 닦는데 물의 이러한 속성을 지켜낼 수 있다면 최고의 지점에 도달할 수 있을 것이고, 그러하므로 「上善若水」라 칭하게 된 것이다.

The water helps us look back on our lives and examines what a wise life is. With the proposition including Tao of “Supreme virtue is like the water「上善若水」”, Lao-tzu attempted to open the way to wisdom by granting concrete meaning to various shapes of the water. Basing on the reason and law of the nature, the water always 'profits all things (利萬物), places at a lower place (處下), and doesn't struggle (不爭), and neither does it do fault because it well puts into practice of 'self-love (慈), frugality (儉), and avoidance of leading the world (不敢爲天下先)’. The river and the sea can not be the kings of all valleys, for nobody doesn't struggle with them, because the river and the sea lower themselves humbly. for the river and the sea clean surroundings if the surroundings are dirty, and for nobody doesn't struggle with the river and the sea because the river and the sea don't struggle, changing themselves when a pass is blocked. Nobody struggles with the river and the sea , so the river and the sea reach the supreme level. If a ruler should keep and put into practice the level of the water, the heaven and the land will harmonize and return to the nature. If a ruler should keep the trait of the water in governing a country, or a human should do so in training himself, they will reach the supreme point. called “ supreme virtue is like the water「上善若水」.”
