Intellectually Disabled People, Animalization, and Animal Turn: A Critical Examination of the Intersection of Disability Liberation and Animal Liberation

본 연구는 장애해방과 동물해방의 교차성을 긍정하는 장애의 동물로의 전환(animal turn) 주장이, 지적장애인 당사자와 장애 연구에 있어 갖는 부정적·긍정적 함의를 비판적으로 검토하였다. 장애의 동물로의 전환은 예로부터 전제된 인간의 합리적, 이성적 능력을 재고하게 하며, 생명의 다양한 존재 방식을 긍정하는 해방 철학을 제공할 수 있다. 그러나 자주 동물에 비유되며 인간 이하로 격하되었던 지적장애인 당사자에게는 그러한 주장이 부적절할 뿐 아니라, 지적장애인의 동물화(animalization)를 영속화시킬 수 있다는 위험성이 제기된다. 따라서 장애의 동물로의 전환 주장은 보다 사려 깊을 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 장애의 동물로의 전환 주장을 위한 장애 연구의 방향을 제시하였다.

This study critically examined the negative and positive implications of the argument for the animal turn of disability, which affirms the intersection of disability liberation and animal liberation, on people with intellectual disabilities and disability research. The animal turn of a disabled person allows us to reconsider the rational and rational abilities of humans that have been assumed since ancient times, and can provide a philosophy of liberation that affirms the various ways of existence of life. However, such claims are not only inappropriate for people with intellectual disabilities who have often been compared to animals and downgraded to subhumans, but there is a risk that they may perpetuate the animalization of people with intellectual disabilities. Therefore, the argument for turning disability into an animal needs to be more thoughtful. To this end, the direction of disability research was presented to argue for an animal turn of disability.
