This study aims to present a furniture design with wood carving as a way to ap- proach the original meaning of the craft as an object for use made by hand. In the history of design, there have been several cases of rejecting the growing dependence on machines in the process of producing crafts or furniture designs, representing William Morris's Art & Craft and Yanagi Muneyoshi's Folk Craft movement. Focusing on the importance of hand-made work pointed out in these two cases, I tried to reveal the handcrafted characteristics to my new de- sign through woodcarving and band saw box techniques. In order to collect data for the devel- opment of design, various products that were actively created by hand, examples of artists' works, and their techniques were studied. Through this process, I paid attention to a texture technique called Naguri, and I was able to examine what results could be presented through the combination of works by hand and machine in the pattern making process. Through the con- clusion of this study, I hope that various hand-made techniques will be accepted and trans- formed modernly in contemporary wood craft, furniture design and furniture industry in the future.
