The purpose of this study is to approach craftsman Baek Tae-won's artistic philosophy by examining his lacquerware modeling techniques using eggshells. The scope of the study is the 126 lacquerware works that he exhibited at his solo exhibitions in 1993 and 1995The egg- shell technique is to create a tiny crack effect by using eggshells on the surface of the lacquerware. First, because of classifying the 126 works, the largest number were holders, fol- lowed by bottles, vases, lamps, and trays. The eggshell lacquerware material is mostly wood, and these works were completed using the wood lathe technique, and the color of almost all works was expressed in black, both interior and exterior. We can easily see that he decorated the surface of lacquerware with abstract patterns in most of his works. The most common deco- rative pattern materials for eggshell lacquerware were mother-of-pearl and eggshell. The most common eggshell expression technique engraved on Baek, Tae-won's eggshell lacquerware was the cluster crack type, followed by the random type and the incremental and diminishing type. Therefore, it was analyzed that Baek, Tae-won's eggshell lacquerware discovered new materials such as eggshell and aluminum based on practical craft philosophy and expressed abstract pat- terns of innovative design in unique and diverse formative forms.
