The Educational Responsibilities of Bu Hyung(父兄) in the Middle of Joseon

Bu Hyung is not simply a pronoun for the father and older brother, but it has come to refer to the one who is responsible for the character and learning of sons in the family. Bu Hyung was the one who passed on the Confucian Ritual to his children and taught them, as well as the one who did not support his entrance into Gwageo(科擧). This can be said to be the result of the implementation of the state-led policy. After the Jungjong restoration(中宗反正), the state emphasized the educational responsibility of Bu Hyung in order to disseminate and establish the ideology and values of Neo-Confucianism. However, in the face of the emphasis on the logic of power, these policies were not very effective. Nonetheless, it spread the perception that if Bu Hyung did not properly educate his sons, he would not be free from social criticism.
