The purpose was to establish. (Design/methodology/approach) First, we analyzed previous studies of village research and village survey research to examine the concept and theoretical background of village, and established an operational definition of ‘village’ in our study. As a result of comparing previous studies through literature research, statistical analysis was performed focusing on the factors that led to common selection criteria for disappearing villages. (Findings) In order to derive areas with a sharp decline in population, data on the population by town, township and dong as of 2017 and 2022 were used to examine the increase and decrease, and the increase and decrease ratio (%) was calculated by dividing the increase and decrease compared to the population in 2017. The top 400 towns, villages and dongs were selected according to the calculated increase/decrease ratio index. Looking at the top 400 areas with a sharp decline in population, Gyeonggi-do (58), Busan (53), Gyeongsangnam-do (39), Jeollanam-do (38), Seoul (36), and Daegu (30). (Research implications or Originality) It can be said to be a practical indicator that can objectively confirm the phenomenon of realistic population decline in a village by using demographic data at the town, township, and dong level.
