Social Workers Who Encountered Clients’ Death: Their Experiences and Needs

종합사회복지관에서 일하는 사회복지사들은 클라이언트의 죽음을 빈번하게 경험하게 됨에도 불구하고 사회복지사가 클라이언트의 죽음을 접한 뒤 무엇을 경험하는지, 사회복지사가 필요로 하는 것은 무엇인지에 대한 연구는 부족한 것이 현실이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 종합사회복지관에 근무하면서 클라이언트의 죽음을 접한 사회복지사 10명을 대상으로 초점집단인터뷰를 실시한 뒤 질적 연구방법을 활용하여 사회복지사들의 경험과 필요를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, ‘견디기 어려운 시간을 마주함’, ‘극복을 위해 노력함’, ‘업무에서 변화를 경험함’, ‘사회복지사에게 필요한 것들을 발견함’등의 4가지 주제와 15가지 범주를 도출하였다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 클라이언트의 죽음을 접한 사회복지사와 사회복지실천 현장을 위한 실천적 제안을 제시하였다.

Despite the fact that social workers working at community welfare centers frequently experience the death of clients, there is a lack of research on what social workers experience after encountering the death of clients and what social workers need. This study conducted a focus group interview with 10 social workers who encountered the death of a client while working at a community welfare center, and then analyzed the experiences and needs of social workers using qualitative research methods. As a result of the analysis, 4 topics and 15 categories were derived, such as “facing unbearable times”, “trying to overcome”, “experiencing changes in work”, and “discovering social workers’ needs”. Based on the results of the study, practical proposals were presented for social workers and social work field.
