메이지시기에 발행된 조선지도와 임진왜란

Maps of Joseon and the Imjin War during Meiji Era Japan

이 논문은 메이지유신 이후부터 청일전쟁기까지 일본에서 발행된 조선지도 중에서 임진왜란 관련내용을 수록한 지도를 분석한 것이다. 메이지유신 이후 조선침략이 가시화되면서 일본의 조선에 대한 관심이 증대되었고, 조선과 관련된 다양한 출판물이 발행되었다. 그 가운데 정한론의 역사적 명분이었던 도요토미 히데요시의 조선침략과 관련된 내용을 수록하는 지도들이 다수 발행되었다. 이들중에는 사다 하쿠보(佐田白茅)처럼 조일간의 외교현장에서 습득한 지도를 바탕으로 제작하거나, 곤도 마코토(近藤真琴)처럼 군인 출신이 조선지도를 연구하여 발행하거나, 일반 출판업자가 상업적인 목적으로 발행한 경우가 있었다. 특히 임진왜란 전적(戰蹟)을 표기한 지도에는 일본군이 승리한전투를 중심으로 표기하거나, ‘패전(敗戰)’한 전투를 ‘고전(苦戰)’했다고 기록하는 등 일본군의 유리한 입장만을 수록하였다. 한편 운요호사건 직후에 발행되었던 지도가 임오군란과 청일전쟁이라는특수를 맞이하여 저자와 출판사가 바뀌어 발행되기도 했다. 청일전쟁 이후 일본의 관심이 만주로 쏠리면서 임진왜란 관련 지도는 더 이상 발행되지 않게 되었다.

This paper analyzes maps of Joseon published in Japan from the Meiji Restoration to the Sino-Japanese War, particularly focusing on those containing information about the Imjin War. After the Meiji Restoration, with the imminent invasion of Korea, Japanese interest in Joseon increased, and various publications on Joseon were issued. In this context, a number of maps were published that contained information about Toyotomi Hideyishi’s invasion of Korea, which was used as a historical justification for the “Conquest of Korea” debates (Seikanron). The examples included Sada Hakubō 佐田白茅, who produced maps based on maps acquired in the field of diplomacy between Joseon and Japan; Kondō Makoto 近藤真琴, a former soldier who studied Joseon's geography and published maps; and general publishers who produced maps for commercial purposes. The maps documenting the battles of the Imjin War were often produced in a manner favoring the Japanese perspective, highlighting Japanese victories or portraying defeats as hard-fought battles. Meanwhile, maps published immediately after the Un'yō Incident were reissued with different authors and publishers in response to the increased demand following the Military Mutiny of 1882 and the Sino-Japanese War. After the Sino-Japanese War, as Japan’s focus shifted to Manchuria, Imjin War-related maps were no longer published.
