Improving Critical and Creative Thinking Skills in English Education: A Proposal for Narrative Text-Based Assessment in CSAT

The 2015 and 2022 Revised English Curricula emphasize critical and creative thinking skills, but CSAT lacks appropriate evaluation items for these skills. To bridge this gap, this study proposes creating assessment questions that measure these skills using narrative texts. Crafting multiple-choice questions with narrative texts proves challenging due to their interpretative nature. To tackle this challenge, the study suggests formulating questions that require interpreting texts from specific perspectives, thereby constraining the meaning of the narrative texts. Two questions were created following these principles and validated as appropriate for the national college entrance exam. Most high school students and English teachers positively assessed both questions, confirming their suitability for evaluating critical and creative thinking skills in the national exam. Teachers find [Question 2] more challenging than [Question 1] due to its sole use of narrative texts, leading to less effective evaluation of critical and creative thinking skills—a problem stemming from teacher training programs discouraging the integration of narratives in English education.
