맹자 집의(集義) 개념의 철학적 해석과 그 도덕교육적 함의

Mencius's “Collecting Righteousness” and Its Moral Education Implications

맹자는 당대 혁신적인 개념인 호연지기를 제출하여 생명활동 에너지인 ‘혈기’를 도덕 에너지인 호연지기로 전환시켰다. 그 과정에서 ‘집의’를 제시하며, ‘집의’ 를 통해서만 호연지기가 생겨난다고 주장하였다. ‘집의’는 『맹자』 7편을 통틀어 철학적으로 중요한 개념 중 하나이나, 후대 신유학자들의 해석은 좀처럼 합일되지 못하였는데, 그 까닭은 맹자의 사상을 자신들의 학문적 틀에 맞추어 해석하려는 경향이 강하였기 때문이다. 하지만, 본 연구는 이러한 해석상의 논란을 부정적으로 여기지 않고, 오히려 맹자의 사상을 풍부하게 해주는 긍정적 측면으로 바라본다. 그래서 맹자 사상의 정수를 담고 있으면서도 쟁점이 되는 ‘집의’에 대해 주자의 리학, 양명의 심학, 선산의 기학적 해석을 살펴본 후, 비판적 고찰을 시도하였다. 그리고 이러한 해석을바탕으로 도덕교육적 의미를 ‘도덕적 의지’, ‘도덕적 실천’, ‘도덕적 덕성’, ‘도덕적용기’라는 네 가지 측면에서 살펴보았다. 그리고 이러한 도덕교육적 의미를 구현하기위한 구체적인 실행 방안들을 모색해 보았다. 향후 맹자 사상에 대한 다양한 해석에기초한 폭넓은 교육 연구가 이루어지길 기대한다.

The purpose of Mencius's “Collecting Righteousness” and Its Moral Education Implications. Mencius, a Chinese philosopher of the Warring States period, proposed the innovative concept of “haoranzhiqi” (浩然之氣), which transformed the life-activity energy of “xueqi” (血氣) into the moral energy of haoranzhiqi. In the process, he presented “collecting righteousness” (集義), arguing that haoranzhiqi is only generated through “collecting righteousness.” “Collecting righteousness” is one of the most important philosophical concepts in the seven chapters of “Mencius,” but the interpretations of later Neo-Confucian scholars have not been easy to reconcile. This is because they had a strong tendency to interpret Mencius's thought in accordance with their own academic frameworks. However, this study does not view these interpretive controversies negatively, but rather as a positive aspect that enriches Mencius's thought. Therefore, after examining the Neo-Confucian interpretations of “collecting righteousness” from the perspectives of Zhu Xi's lixue (理學), Wang Yangming's xinxue (心學), and Xin'an's qixue (氣學), this study attempts a critical examination. And based on this interpretation, the meaning of moral education was examined in four aspects: ‘moral will’, ‘moral practice’, ‘moral virtue’, and ‘moral courage’. Finally, this study explores concrete implementation plans to realize these moral educational implications. This study hopes that in the future, a wide range of educational research will be conducted based on various interpretations of Mencius's thought.
