교류⋅관계사적 측면에서 바라본 남북한 영화의 상호 표상 (1980∼1994)

Mutual Representation of North and South Korean Films from the Perspective of Exchange and Relationship History (1980∼1994)

본 논문은 1980년부터 1994년까지 남북한 영화 속에서 나타나는 상호 표상을비교⋅분석한 연구의 결과물이다. 연구의 시간적 범주는 크게 두 시기로 구분된다. 먼저, 1980년부터 1987년까지는 남북한 모두 체제 안정화를 추구하고 상호간 문화 교류의 가능성을 타진하던 시기였다. 당시 남한 영화 속에는 조총련 등북한 관련 인물이 직접적으로 등장하거나 그들의 심리적 갈등이 다루어지면서북한 표상의 스펙트럼이 보다 확대되어 갔다. 동시기 북한의 경우, 영화의 오락성이 강화되어 가던 추세 하에서 작품 속 남한 표상은 1970년대와의 연속선상에 있으면서도 다채로움이 더해짐으로써 부분적인 변화를 보였다. 다음으로, 1987년부터 1994년까지는 국내외 정세 변화라는 커다란 역사적 소용돌이 속에서 영화 교류가 현실화되던 시기였다. 당시 남한 영화에서는 빨치산의 인간적인 모습이나전쟁의 피폐함 속에서 허덕이던 사람들의 생활상 등이 사실적으로 표현되었는데, 이로써 북한에 대한 적대감이나 반공 이데올로기가 중심을 이루던 이전의 제작경향과는 결을 달리하게 되었다. 동시기 북한 영화에서 역시 이산가족, 남북통일등이 주된 소재로 활용되었다. 그러면서 남한에 대한 다면적 이미지가 제시되고그 대립각의 수위가 조절되는 한편, 민족 공동체성이나 통일의 필요성이 강조되기도 하였다.

This study compared and analyzed the mutual representations that appear in North and South Korean films from 1980 to 1994,largely divided into two periods. First, from 1980 to 1987, both Koreas sought to stabilize their regimes and explored the possibility of inter-Korean cultural exchange and cooperation. At the time, South Korean films had North Korean-related figures such as Chongryon (General Association of Korean Residents in Japan) directly appear and addressed their psychological conflicts, expanding the spectrum of North Korean representation. In North Korean films during the same period, their representations of South Korea showed partial changes by adding variety while continuing from the 1970s, amid the trend of stronger entertainment value of movies. Next, from 1987 to 1994 was a period when the two Koreas exchanged films amid great historical whirlwinds in domestic and international situations. At the time, South Korean films portrayed the human aspect of anti-Japanese North Korean communist faction (partizan) and the lives of people struggling in the devastation of war, which was a contrast to the previous production trends that focused on hostility toward North Korea or anti-communist ideology. North Korean films of the same period also depicted separated families and inter-Korean unification as the main themes, along with presenting a multifaceted image of South Korea, adjusting the level of conflict was adjusted, and emphasizing the need for national identity and unification.
