The Life and Poetry of Geumcheon Jeong Sisu

본고는 조선 중기 거창의 충의지사인 琴川 鄭時修(1601~1647)의 생애와 시 세계를 고찰하는 데에 목적을 두었다. 정시수는 병자호란 때 거창에서 의병을 일으킨 충의지사이다. 그는 청나라와 강화하였다는 소식을 듣고 크게 개탄하였으며, 이후 琴川齋에 은거하여 학문을 탐구하고 제자를 양성하며 여생을 마쳤다. 본고는 정시수에 관한 첫 연구이므로 정시수의 생애를 상세히 재구하고, 그의 은거 생활에서 시 창작이 중요한 의미를 지녔음을 밝혔다. 정시수의 시 세계는 ‘忠義’와 ‘閑適’ 그리고 ‘諷諭’, 세 가지 양상으로 나누어 살펴보았다. ‘충의’는 임금에 대한 충정과 명나라에 대한 절의를 말하는데, 정시수는 제갈량의 충의를 지향하였다. ‘한적’은 세속의 명리를 멀리하고 자연에 은거하여 자연의 이치에 순응하는 것인데, 정시수는 도연명의 한적을 추구하였다. ‘충의’와 ‘한적’은 공통적으로 세속의 명리에 뜻을 두지 않고 혼탁한 세상과 타협하지 않는 강개함과 담박함의 속성을 지녔다. 이는 부조리한 현실에 대한 책임 의식과 비판 정신의 소산이자 선을 권장하고 악을 징계하는 방법의 하나인 ‘풍유’와도 연관되었다. 정시수는 삶과 시 세계가 일치되는 면모를 보여주었는데, 이런 점에서 그의 시는 오늘날 다시 음미해 볼 가치가 있는 것이다.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the life and poetry world of Geumcheon Jeong Sisu(1601~1647), who was a righteous scholar lived in Geochang in the mid-Joseon period. Jeong Sisu was a righteous scholar who led an army raised in the cause of justice in Geochang during Byeongjahoran War. After hearing that Joseon had formed a reinforcement with the Qing Dynasty, he expressed great regret and retired to his hometown to pursue scholarship, cultivate disciples, and spend his remaining years. This paper first examines Jeong Sisu's life in detail and then highlights the importance of his poetry during his retirement. Next, Jeong Sisu's poetry world is divided into three aspects: ‘loyalty’, ‘seclusion’, and ‘satire’. ‘Loyalty’ refers to loyalty to the king and reverence for the Ming Dynasty, and Jeong Sisu pursued the loyalty of Jegalryang. ‘Seclusion’ refers to distancing oneself from secular Mingli and seeking to conform to the natural order by taking refuge in nature, and Jeong Sisu pursued the seclusion of Doyeonmyeong. Both ‘loyalty’ and ‘seclusion’ share a common attribute of not placing importance on secular Mingli and not compromising with the hazy world. This is related to ‘satire’, which is one way of encouraging good and punishing evil by cultivating a sense of responsibility and criticism towards the absurd reality. Jeong Sisu demonstrated the aspect of life that aligned with his poetry, making his poetry valuable to be appreciated today.
