Today, efforts for regional development are global enough to be called the era of decentralization. Local government organizations at the center of the efforts are striving to study regional studies to establish a regional identity for their local residents and develop the region. Regional science in Korea began in earnest with the implementation of the local government system in the 1990s, so it does not have a deep history. Therefore, there is no firm system in place for the concept, system, research methodology, and approach method of regional studies as a discipline. Therefore, constant reflection and reflection on the achievements of regional research, and direction setting for regional development should be sought. To this end, this paper sought to find the direction in which regional studies should proceed in the future by extracting papers that have been conducted by domestic metropolitan governments on a regional basis and organizing their criticisms. These studies will provide the benefit of presenting the methodology of regional studies research to dedicated regional research institutes and regional studies researchers to be established in the future.
