Korea’s Military Thought : Some Ideas for Its Development

한국의 군사사상은 무엇인가? 과연 한국의 국방정책과 군사전략, 그리고 군사교리를 발전시키고 수립하는데 지침이 될 수 있는 우리 고유의 군사사상은 존재하는가? 이에 대한 답을 제시하기는 매우 어렵다. 그것은 지금까지 한국 군사문제의 뿌리라 할 수 있는 우리 군사사상에 대한 고민과 연구가 제대로 이루어지지 않았기 때문이다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 한국의 군사사상의 내용을 구체적으로 파헤치기보다는 그러한 연구의 필요성과 함께 향후 한국의 군사사상을 발전시키기 위한 큰 틀에서의 방향을 제시하는데 주안을 둔다. 필자는 군사사상을 분석하기 위해 전쟁관, 전쟁양상과 전쟁의 목적, 군사전략 그리고 작전수행 방법이라는 네 가지 요소를 설정한다. 그리고 이 요소들을 중심으로 먼저 동서양 주요 전략가들의 군사사상을 검토함으로써 한국의 군사사상 분석을 위한 기본 개념과 틀을 설정한다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 현재 한국이 지향하고 있는 군사사상의 현실태와 문제점을 진단한 후, 향후 한국의 군사사상이 발전해야 할 방향을 제시한다.

What is Korea’s military thought? Does Korea’s indigenous military thought exist? It is difficult to answer this question, because there has been few researches on this issue up to now. This article, therefore, focuses on proposing the direction in developing Korean military thought afterwards rather than analyzing specific contents of current military thought. For this purpose, I will use the four factors that is considered as main components of military thought: that is, perceptions on war, form of warfare to fight, military strategy, and operational art. Firstly, this article will review military thought of Sun Tsu, Clausewitz, Mao Zedong and Liddell Hart. Next, it will analyze current status of Korea’s thinking about war and strategy since the Korean War. And then, I will suggest some ideas to develop Korean military thought.
