하동지역 전설의 존재양상과 지역성

The Existence Mode and Locality of Legends in Hadong Region

본 연구의 목적은 하동지역에서 전승되는 전설의 존재양상과 지역성을 고찰하려는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 하동지역 전설의 존재양상을 ‘자연전설’, ‘인문전설’, ‘인물전설’의 세 가지 하위 유형으로 분류하여 검토하였다. 하동지역에서만 발견되는 특수한 전설을 제외하고는 인근의 타 지역 전설과의 대비를 통해 하동지역 전설이 가지는 차이와 특성을 세밀하게 도출하고자 하였다. 다음으로 하동지역 전설에 나타난 지역성과 지역민의 의식을 살펴보았다. 그 결과는 다섯 가지 양상으로 정리된다. 첫째 하동의 지형·지리적 특수성의 반영이다. 둘째, 불교문화에 대한 자부심이다. 셋째, 전라도에 대한 경쟁의식이다. 넷째, 선계적(仙界的) 이상지로서의 특수성이다. 다섯째, 변혁에 대한 희구(希求)의식과 주체성이다. 본 연구의 성과는 그간 자료 보고에 그쳤던 하동지역 전설에 주목하고 그 특징을 살펴 지역적 특수성을 밝히고자 하였다는 데 의의가 있을 것으로 생각된다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the existence mode and locality of legends handed down in the region of Hadong. For this, the existence mode of legends in Hadong region is classified for review into three sub-categories of ‘natural object legend,’ ‘human & cultural legend,’ and ‘character legend.’ Except for unique legends found only in Hadong region, legends of Hadong region are compared with legends of other neighborhood regions, thereby detecting detailed differences and characteristics inherent in legends of Hadong region. Next, locality and values found in legends of Hadong region are examined. The results may be summarized into five aspects. The first is the reflection of the topographical and geographical peculiarities of Hadong. The second is pride in Buddhist culture. The third is a rivalry with Jeolla-do. The fourth is peculiarities as an ideal place for a fairyland. The fifth is subjectivity and aspirations for drastic changes. This study is deemed significant in that it tried to identify regional peculiarities of legends in Hadong region by paying attention to the legends, only data of which had been reported meanwhile, and examining their characteristics.
