성인에게 필요한 수학 소양에 관한 고찰

A Study on Mathematical Literacy Required by Adults

본 연구에서는 ‘성인에게 필요한 수학 능력에 대한 개념’이 어떻게 변해왔는지에 관한 이론적 고찰 위에 현재 우리나라 성인들이 수학을 무엇으로 인식하고 있는지를 분석하여 ‘현재 성인들에게 필요한 수학 소양’이 무엇인지 결과를 도출하였다. 본 연구에서 수학 소양은 수학적 기능, 지식, 태도가 통합된 개념으로 현시대에 필요한 수학 능력을 의미한다. 이론적 고찰 결과, 우리나라 평생교육에서 성인에게 필요한 수학 소양으로 제시하고 있는 개념은 ‘현재 성인에게 필요한 수학 소양’의 개념으로는 협소하였다. 연구 결과, 성인들은 ‘현재 성인에게 필요한 수학 소양’을 일상화된 기초 연산뿐만 아니라 추론, 모델링, 정보처리, 의사소통과 같은 수학적인 기능을 잘 사용하는 것으로 인식하고 있었고, 수학 지식을 수학 개념이 발생한 맥락 속에서 이해하고자 했으며 수학에 대해 긍정적으로 가치 판단하고자 했다. 성인들이 인식하고 있는 수학 소양은 PISA, ALL과 PIAAC에서 ‘현재 성인에게 필요한 수학 소양’으로 제시한 개념과 유사하였다. 연구 결과에 비추어, 우리나라 성인에게 필요한 수학 능력에 대한 재개념화, 수학교육을 평생교육의 측면에서 바라보는 인식 전환의 필요성, 성인에게 수학과 관련한 긍정적인 경험을 제공할 것과 다양한 차원의 후속 연구를 제언하였다.

In this study, we analyzed the current perception of mathematical literacy among Korean adults and determined their mathematical literacy needs, based on a theoretical review of how the concept of mathematical literacy required for adults has changed. Mathematical literacy, which refers to the mathematical ability currently required, is a concept that integrates mathematical skills, knowledge, and attitudes. Following the theoretical review, it was found that the mathematical literacy provided by lifelong education in Korea falls short of the current requirements for adults. The study revealed that the current mathematical literacy expected of adults involves the application of mathematical skills such as reasoning, modeling, information processing, and communication as well as routine basic arithmetic. Furthermore, adults' perceptions of mathematical literacy closely aligned with the definitions presented by PISA, ALL, and PIAAC. The results of the study suggest the following actions: re-conceptualizing the mathematical skills needed by Korean adults, shifting the perception of mathematics education from a lifelong learning perspective, offering positive mathematical experiences to adults, and identifying areas for further research.
