중년기에 진로전환을 한 여성 심리상담사의 진로결정 경험에 관한 내러티브 탐구

‘우연적 사건’을 중심으로

목적 이 연구는 중년기 여성이 심리상담사로 진로결정을 하는 과정에서 우연을 진로결정의 기회로 살아낸 경험에 대하여 그 경험의 의미와 우연을 기회로 만든 특성을 탐구하고 이해하고자 하였다. 방법 이를 위하여 우연적 사건을 계기로 진로결정을 하였다고 응답한 두 명의 중년기 여성 심리상담사를 선정하여, 그들의 경험에 관하여 Clandinin과 Connelly(2000)의 내러티브 탐구를 통하여 해석과 분석, 이해를 시도하였다. 내러티브 탐구는 인간 이해를 위하여 개별 인간들의 살아진 경험 이야기를 탐구하는 질적 연구 방법이다(홍영숙, 2015). 결과 연구참여자들은 우연적 사건을 경험하며 자신들의 삶의 여정에서 이루지 못하였던 꿈을 떠올리고 새로이 도전해 보는 경험을 하였다. 우연적 사건을 진로결정으로 살아낸 경험의 의미를 살펴보면, 이은주는 ‘자아실현의 과정’, 김현주는 ‘열등감 극복의 과정’이었다. 우연적 사건을 진로결정으로 이끈 특성으로, 이은주는 ‘내 이름으로 서고자 하는 의지’와 ‘남편의 지지’가 두드러졌으며, 김현주는 ‘전문직에 대한 동경’과 ‘배움에 대한 열정’이 있었다. 또한 연구참여자들은 모두 ‘가족의 지지’를 받았으며, ‘중년기에 대한 성찰적 자각’을 하였는데, 이는 중년기를 맞이한 연구참여자들이 우연적 사건을 계기로 진로결정을 하는 과정에서 버팀목이 되었다. 결론 이 연구는 중년기에 진로전환을 한 두 명의 여성 심리상담사의 진로결정 과정에 대하여 중년기라는 상황과 더불어 개별적 삶의 맥락에서 우연적 사건을 어떻게 진로결정으로 살아냈는지 통합적으로 이해할 수 있었다는 데 의의가 있다. 이 연구의 결과가 중년기에 진로전환을 한 여성 심리상담사와 중년기 여성의 진로전환에 대한 이해로 확장되어 상담사 교육과 중년기 진로상담 등에서 우연적 요소를 다루는 과정에 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.

Objectives This study attempted to explore and understand the meaning of the experience and the characteristics that made happenstance events an opportunities for middle-aged women to make career decisions as psycho-logical counselors. Methods This study selected two middle-aged female psychological counselors who responded that they made career decisions based on happenstance events and attempted to interpret, analyze, and understand the experi-ences of the study participants through the narrative inquiry of Clandinin and Connelly(2000). Narrative inquiry is a qualitative research method that explores the stories of individual humans' lived experiences for human under-standing(Hong Young-sook, 2015). Results Participants in the study experienced happenstance events, recalled dreams that they had not achieved on the journey of their lives, and experienced new challenges. Looking at the meaning of the experience of living an happenstance event through career decision, Lee Eun-joo was a ‘process of self-realization’ and Kim Hyun-joo was a ‘process of overcoming inferiority.’ As a characteristic that led happenstance events to career decisions, Lee Eun-joo stood out for her ‘will to stand under my name’ and ‘husband's support,’ while Kim Hyun-joo had ‘yearning for professional jobs’ and ‘passion for learning.’ In addition, all of the study participants received ‘family support’ and had ‘reflective awareness of middle age,’ which supported the middle-aged study participants in the process of making career decisions based on happenstance events. Conclusions This study is meaningful in that it was possible to comprehensively understand how happenstance events lived through career decisions in the context of individual lives, along with the situation of middle age, re-garding the career decision process of two female psychological counselors who changed their careers in middle age. It is hoped that the results of this study will expand to understanding the career change of female psycho-logical counselors and middle-aged women who have changed their careers in middle age, contributing to the process of dealing with happenstance factors in counselor education and middle-aged career counseling.
