The Sino-Russian Strategic Solidarity and the Korean Peninsula

For the last few decades, PRC and Russia have incessantly succeeded in expending their coalition in the security and the military sector. The relationship among high ranking military officials of the two countries has become intimate, and the bilateral military technological cooperation has vastly grown. Given the fact that the degree of cooperation between the two countries has been limited to opposing Missile Defense (MD) and exchanging technological skills, the recent changes in the bilateral relationship of China and Russia reaching to the level of military and operations since the Combined Military Training in August, 2005, calls for attention from the neighboring states including South Korea. The interest of ROK arises from positive answer of “yes,” for the following questions: how this strategic coalition of the Sino-Russia relations can restrain or balance the United States' will and capability; and how this mutual coalition will change the statue quo of overall power structure of the world politics, including that of the Korean peninsula and the Southeast Asian region. The possible quasi-bipolarity between the Sino-Russia coalition and the U.S-Japan alliance is likely to provide a little space for ROK to pursue its national security, based on the idea of self-help. ROK will face with the dilemma of choosing its “where-to-stand” whenever comprehensive issues diplomatic, economic, and military of national security arise; and the situation is much complex than how it was during the Cold War era. The more Sino-Russia coalition consolidates, the more South Korea's survival strategy to promote national interests and the “perpetual peace” is under constraint.
