영화 속 은유적 표현방법을 코엔형제의 <노인을 위한 나라는 없다> 작품분석을 통해 알아본다. 언어 수사학의 하나인 은유는, 영화 속에서 미쟝센과 이미지 등을 통해 영화 언어로 기능하며, 작품의 예술성과 함께 관객과의 소통을 높이는역할을 하고 있다. 코엔형제는 영화언어–은유 사용에 있어 뛰어난 감독이다. 특히 <노인을 위한 나라는 없다>에서는, 작품의 제목, 서부 사막의 공간, 지옥의 문지기와 같은 악인 캐릭터 그리고 동전과 총과 같은 소품 등을 이용한 은유표현을통해 살인범을 쫓는 추격전’이라는 명목상의 내러티브를 넘어서는 중층의 내러티브를 구축하고 있다. 본 연구는 코엔 형제의 <노인을 위한 나라는 없다>에 나타난 은유를 분석함으로써 영화의 예술성을 높이는 영화 수사학에 대하여 알아보고자 한다. 본 연구가 평단과 관객의 고른 지지를 받는 예술 영화의 제작에 도움이 되기를 희망한다.
The method of metaphorical expression in the film is explored through analysis of the works of the Coen brothers <No Country for Old Men>. Metaphor, one of the rhetoric of languages, functions as a film language through mise-en-scène and images in the film, and plays a role in enhancing communication with the audience along with the artistry of the work. The Coen brothers are excellent directors in the use of cinematic language – metaphor. In particular, in <No Country for Old Men>, the title of the work, the space in the western desert, evil characters such as the gatekeepers of hell, and props such as coins and guns are used metaphorically to express multiple layers of narrative that goes beyond the narrative that the nominal meaning of ‘a chase after a murderer’. The purpose of this study is to investigate the rhetoric of film that enhances the artistry of film by analyzing the metaphor in <No Country for Old Men>. It is hoped that this study will be helpful in the production of art films that are evenly supported by critics and audiences.
