Irony of Korean historical films in the 2000s: Focusing on The Fortress, The Face Reader, Forbidden Quest

2000년대 한국영화의 특징으로는 ‘장르영화의 융성’과 ‘유머의 강조’를 포함시킬 수 있을 것이다. 특히, 사극은 가장 흥행성이 높은 장르로서 각별한 주목을 받고 있다. 2000년대 사극의 가장 큰 특징은 팩션(faction)의 수용이라는 점일 것이다. 그래서 사극을, 역사적 사실 재현에 충실한 사실적 사극, 허구의 상상력을 가미한 재인적 사극, 역사적 배경을 단지 장식으로만 차용한 장식적 사극으로 분류하였다. 이러한 분류 위에서 아이러니 개념을 이용하여 <관상>, <남한산성>, <음란서생>을 분석하였다. 아이러니는 상황의 아이러니와 말의 아이러니로 나눌 수 있다. 특히 이러한 아이러니는 카니발레스크의 개념과도 함께 쓰일 수 있었다. 또 노스럽 프라이의 양식의 이론과 에이론(eiron) 등의 인물 개념도 활용하였다. 결과적으로, 사실적 사극인 <남한산성>을 상황의 아이러니를 설정한 후 사건의 현재적 의미를 환기하는 것으로 보았으며, 재인적 사극인 <관상>은 아이러니 인물의 카니발레스크를통한 대화성을 획득하는 것으로 보았다. 또 장식적 사극인 <음란서생>에서는 아이러니 인물의 욕동 추구 플롯의 서스펜스를 강화하기 위해 시대가 차용되었으며, 궁극적으로는 과거와 현재를 비관적으로 조망하고 있는 것으로 보았다.

The characteristics of Korean films in the 2000s may include the ‘mutilation of genre films’ and ‘emphasis of humor’. In particular, historical film drawing special attention as the most popular genre. The biggest feature of historical films in the 2000s would be the acceptance of factions. Thus, historical films were classified as realistic historical films faithful to the reproduction of historical facts, analytical historical films with the imagination of processing, and ornament historical films with historical backgrounds as mere decorations. By this classification, the irony concept was used to analyze Forbidden Quest(2006), The Face Reader(2013), The Fortress(2017). Irony can be divided into the irony of situations and the irony of words. This irony, in particular, could be used in conjunction with the concept of carnivalesque. I also used Northrop Frye’s theory of style, the concept of characters such as Eiron, and Mikhail Bachchin’s concept of carnivalesque. As a result, the realistic historical film Fortress was d efined a s a reminder of t h e present meaning of the event after setting up the irony of the situation, and the interpretative historical film he Face Reader was defined as gaining interactive character through the irony character’s carnivalesque. In addition, the ornament historical film Forbidden Quest used the era was borrowed to strengthen the suspense of the irony character’s plot to pursue the drive, and ultimately gives a pessimistic perspective of the past and the present.
