On Creating a List of Hangul Old Novel for Writing Literary History

한국어를 기록할 수 있는 문자가 15세기 중반에나 만들어졌으므로, 훈민정음 창제이전에는 언어를 기록하기 위해서는 한자를 빌려 쓸 수밖에 없었다. 게다가 19세기말까지 한국에서 사용한 공식문자는 한자이므로, 남겨진 자료는 한문으로 쓴 것이 국문으로 쓴 것보다 훨씬 많다. 이와 같은 현실 때문에, 한국문학사는 국문으로 된 문학작품보다는 한문으로 쓴 문학작품을 중심으로 한 역사이다. 고소설사도 마찬가지이다. 국문으로 된 고소설 중에는 작자와 창작시기를 알 수 있는 작품이 없으므로, 작자와 창작시기를 알 수 있는 한문소설을 중심으로 기술해왔다. 필자는 이 논문에서, 기존에 편의주의적으로 기술한 소설사의 문제점을 얘기하고, 당대의 현실을 반영한 소설사를 써야한다는 점을 강조했다. 즉, 작자가 알려진 한문소설로 뼈대를 만든 후에, 작자와 창작시기를 알 수 없는 국문소설을 적당히 끼워 넣는 방식의 고소설사가 아닌, 국문소설 중심의 소설사를 기술해야 한다는 것이다.

Since characters capable of recording the Korean language were created only in the mid-15th century, there was no choice but to borrow Chinese characters to record the language before the creation of Hunminjeongeum. Moreover, since the official script used in Korea until the end of the 19th century was Chinese characters, the remaining materials written in Chinese characters are much more numerous than those written in Korean characters. Due to these circumstances, the history of Korean literature is centered on literary works written in Chinese characters rather than those written in Korean. The same goes for the history of old novels. Among old novels in Korean, there are no works whose author and creation period can be known, so the research has focused on the novels written in Chinese characters whose author and creation period can be identified. In this paper, I pointed out that the existing history of Korean novels has been written in a convenience-based way, and emphasized the need to write a history of novels that reflects the reality of the time. In other words, rather than creating a framework with Chinese character novels whose authors are known and then inserting Korean novels whose authors and creation times are unknown, the history of novels should be written with a focus on the novels written in Korean.
