이 논문은 그동안 1930년대 중반으로 한정되었던 경성촬영소 연구를 1930년대 초로 소급해, 동 촬영소의 제작 활동을 구체적으로 복원하는 것을 목표로 한다. 새롭게 발굴된 일본어 사료를 통해 지금까지의 영화사 기록과 기술에 포함되지 않은 내용들을 점검했다. 이 논문은 일본인 배우 도야마 미쓰루(遠山滿)가 주도하고 나운규, 김상진이 함께한 1930년 말에서 1932년 초까지의 시기를 동 촬영소의 전기(前期)로 규정하고, 한일 비교영화사적 시야에서 조선에서 진행된 일본영화인들의 활동에 주목하였다. 특히 조선영화인과 일본영화인들이 함께 한 제작 활동을 ‘협업(協業) 시스템’이라는 프레임으로 고찰했다. 이를 통해 일본 영화스튜디오 제작 방식의 영향 관계 그리고 상영용 프린트의 제작 상황 등 그동안 검토되지 못한 초기 한국영화의 구체적인 제작 환경을 검토할 수 있었다. 전자는현대극과 시대극의 분리 제작 체제, 후자는 무성영화 프린트의 간자막에 사용된언어 등의 문제가 해당된다. 일제시기 영화사 기술에서 무엇보다 중요한 것은 서술의 균형감을 회복하는 것이고 이는 비교영화사적 시야로의 확장과 사료의 확보에서 그 동력을 얻을 수 있다.
Casting back the early 1930s of Gyeongseong Studios, this paper aims for restoring the particular activities of the Studios on which research has been limited to its production in the mid 1930s. I examined the historical materials newly discovered from Japanese documents that had not been included in Korean film historiography, and focused on the activities of Japanese filmmakers working in Joseon in the view of comparative film history. In this paper, I define that the period from the end of 1930 to the early 1932 is the former period of the Studios, when Toyama Mitsuru led the Studios and Na Un-gyu and Kim Sang-jin joined the Studios. I look into the cooperative productions by Joseon and Japanese filmmakers as a frame of ‘cooperation system.’ I also look through the early Korean film production environment including the influence of the Japanese studio production system and the situation of producing prints for theatrical release, which could not be considered in Korean film history. Particularly, the former includes the separate production systems of modern dramas and periodical ones and the languages for the intertitles in silent films. What is important in film history during the colonial period is to maintain balance of historical description, which expansion to the view of comparative film history and securing historical document can support.
