본고는 로맨스 장르와 사랑 이야기에 대한 원형을 파악하고 작품성을 분석하기 위해서 시나리오의 완성도와 작품성이 검증된 진가신(陳可辛) 감독의 <첨밀밀>을 텍스트로 삼았다. 이를 위하여 오래 전부터 사용되던 ‘The Three Act Structure’와, Ronald B. Tobias)의 플롯 이론을 사용하여 스토리 구조를 파악했으며, 영화적 장치로는 인물의 연기, 대사, 소품, 공간을 분석하여 숨은 기호와 상징을 고찰해 보았다. 이 결과, <첨밀밀>은 일반적인 3장 구조를 따르지만 사랑 플롯으로 대조해보았을 때, 명백하게 주인공이 교차되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 전통적인 사랑 플롯에서는 적극적인 연인과, 희생자적인 연인으로 구분되고, 적극적인 연인 쪽이 장애물을 극복해내는 주인공으로 취급된다. 그러나 <첨밀밀>은 적극적인 쪽과 희생자적인 쪽이 교차되고 있음에도 이야기의 흐름이 깨지지 않고, 자연스럽게 둘 다 주인공의 위치로 대등하게 끌어올리는 기법을 보여주었다. 이러한 분석을 통해 3장 구조와 플롯 이론을 실제 창작에 고차원적으로 적용한 사례를 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 <첨밀밀>에 사용된 수많은 영화적 장치와 숨은 의미를 고찰해봄으로써, <첨밀밀>이라는 영화의 다양한 독해를 시도하였다.
This paper uses the acclaimed romance movie <Comrades: Almost a Love Story (known as Chum Mil Mil in Korean, directed by Jin Ga Sin)> as a text, in order to understand the archetype of the romance genre and love stories, and also to analyze general quality of it. To do this, I use ‘The Three Act Structure’, which has been used for a long time, and the plot theory of Ronald B. Tobias to understand the structure of the story. For the cinematic devices I review hidden signs and symbols by analyzing acting, dialogues, props and spaces. As a result, even though the movie follows The Three Act Structure generally, the switching of main characters is evident when analyzed with love plot. In the traditional love plot, there usually is a clear separation between an active lover and a victimized lover, and the former takes the roll to overcome the obstacles. However, despite of switching an active one and a victimized one, the narrative of the story is intact without being broken and shows techniques to raise naturally both to the position of the main characters. Through this analysis, it is shown that The Three Act Structure and the plot theory are applied successfully to actual movie at high level. Also, I attempt to read the movie from many angles by examining the numerous cinematic devices and hidden meanings used in it.
