영화 생산자 중심으로 본 크라우드 펀딩의 실태

The True Face of Crowdfunding, From the Perspective of Film Makers

‘크라우드 펀딩(crowd funding)’이 점차 확산되고 있다. 하지만 크라우드 펀딩은 단순히 영화 생산자들에게 긍정적인 효과만을 제공하는 것이 아니며, 크라우드 펀딩을 추진하는 과정에는 다양한 어려움이 존재한다. 따라서 본 논문에서는영화 분야를 포함한 전반적인 크라우드 펀딩에 대한 선행 연구를 토대로 생산자가 크라우드 펀딩을 통해 취할 수 있는 장점을 분석한 다음, 영화와 관련한 크라우드 펀딩을 가장 활발히 진행해 오고 있는 후원형 크라우드 펀딩 플랫폼과 지분투자형 크라우드 펀딩 플랫폼에서 2016년 동안 추진된 펀딩 성공 사례들을 조사⋅ 분석하여 선행 연구들이 제기한 장점이 영화 생산자들에게 얼마나 적용되고 있는가를 실증적으로 고찰해보고자 하였다. 영화 생산자가 펀딩을 추진하고 운영함에 있어 자율성을 지니는지와 빠르게자금을 조성할 수 있는가의 여부를 살펴본 결과, 영화 생산자는 크라우드 펀딩을통해 짧은 기간 동안 생산 비용을 모아나갈 수 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 반면, 실제로 크라우드 펀딩을 수행해나가는 데에는 다양한 제한들이 존재하는 것으로나타났다. 또한 크라우드 펀딩을 통해 영화 생산의 진입 장벽을 낮출 수 있는지와 매출액 증대에 영향을 미치는지를 고찰해본 결과, 긍정적인 면과 부정적인 면이 동시에 나타나고 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 이처럼 크라우드 펀딩은 단순히 영화 생산자들에게 장점만을 가져다주지 않으며 펀딩을 추진하고 운영하는 과정에는 다양한 제약과 한계가 존재한다. 따라서크라우드 펀딩을 궁극적으로 활성화해나가기 위해 영화 생산자 입장에서 펀딩과관련된 어려움을 세밀히 조사⋅분석하고 이를 개선해나가는 노력이 필요하다.

The use of crowdfunding for movie projects has been gradually, yet widely, increasing. Crowdfunding has generated positive support for many film makers but the running of it always involved some obstacles to overcome. In that regard, this study first reviews previous studies on crowdfunding and then highlights what they identify as positive points that project film makers can take from crowdfunding. It then analyzes the successful crowdfunding cases from the year of 2016 funded on the most active movie crowdfunding (both Reward-based and Equity) platforms. Lastly, the study empirically investigates how much of those positive points that the previous studies identified have actually been in effect for the film makers. After analyzing the degrees of autonomy that the film makers have in the management of funding in relation to how quickly the goal amount was reached, the study found that the film makers were able to collect the goal amount in a short time period through crowdfunding. On the other hand, the study also revealed various challenges and limitations that crowdfunding faces. The effects of crowdfunding on revenue increase and the accessibility of movie production were also looked into, and the results reported both positive and negative aspects. From the results, it was evident that crowdfunding not only benefits the film makers but it also imposes difficulties throughout its process. It is, therefore, necessary for the film makers to pay close attention to these challenges and limitations throughout the funding process in order to make crowdfunding truly dependable.
