프레테릭 와이즈먼(Frederick Wiseman)의 다큐멘터리영화방법론 고찰

Frederick Wiseman’s Documentary Approaches and Analysis of 'High School'(1968)

본 논문은 미국 다이렉트 시네마 감독들 가운데 한 명으로 손꼽히는 프레데릭 와이즈먼의 화방법론과 그의 초기 표작인 <고등학교(High School)>를 집중 적으로 고찰하다. 프레데릭 와이즈먼은 지속적으로 미국의 정부기관에 관한 다 큐멘터리화를 만들어왔으며, 통상적인 다큐멘터리화의 서사기법과 달리 연속적이거나 극적(劇的)인 이야기 구조를 따르지 않는 방식으로 화를 만드는 감 독으로 정평이 나있다. 본 논문은 프레데릭 와이즈먼이 여러 인터뷰나 저술에서 자신의 화방법론에 해 직접 밝힌 내용을 중점적으로 살펴보면서 그의 화방법론과 <고등학교>를 분석적으로 고찰하다. 또한 본 논문은 프레데릭 와이즈먼이 직접 명명한 ‘발견 의 여행’과 ‘리얼리티 픽숀’이라는 개념을 통해 프레데릭 와이즈먼의 화적 방 법론을 고찰하고 이를 근거로 텍스트로서의 <고등학교>를 분석적으로 살펴보았 다. 특히 ‘발견의 여행’을 다룬 장에서는 프레데릭 와이즈먼의 촬과정에 나타나 는 화철학과 방법론을, 그리고 ‘리얼리티 픽숀’을 통해서는 프레데릭 와이즈먼 의 편집과정을 보다 집중적으로 살펴보았다. 한편 프레데릭 와이즈먼은 촬과정 에서 화현장의 생생한 경험을 전달할 수 있는 ‘시퀀스(또는 사건)의 발견’에 초 점을 두었으며, 편집과정에서는 시퀀스의 구조적인 배치와 배열을 통해 화감독 의 관점을 드러내는 방식으로 화를 완성하려 하다. 한 마디로 <고등학교>는 학교의 ‘권력’과 이데올로기에 관한 화이다. 프레데 릭 와이즈먼은 화에서 교사/학교행정가들과 학생들, 그리고 학부모 간의 관계 와 행위를 통해 학교의 권력 관계를 탐구한다. 이런 점에서 <고등학교>는 한 고 등학교에 한 감독의 개인적인 경험을 담은 보고서이자 1960년 미국의 ‘또 다 른 얼굴’에 한 사회적 담론이라고 할 수 있다.

Frederick Wiseman is one of American Direct Cinema filmmakers. This paper explores his documentary methodology and critically analyzes <High School> which is one of his early works. Frederick Wiseman’s approaches to documentary film are very unique in that he has made many films on American institutions and his films do not follow causally contiguous narrative or dramatic structure. The paper especially focuses on Frederick Wisemant’s statements about his thoughts on documentary film in order to find out his cinematic philosophy and approaches and thereby tries to explore into <High School>. This paper looks into Frederick Wiseman’s cinematic ideas and <High School> through his terms of ‘voyage of discovery’ and ‘reality fiction’. Especially features of his shooting process and editing process are elucidated in terms of ‘voyage of discovery’ and ‘reality fiction’ respectively. In summary, Frederick Wiseman focuses on discovery of sequence(or event) in the shooting process in order to transmit his vivid experience of the school to audience while he tries to expose his cinematic point of view by placing and arranging sequences in the editing process. In a word, <High School> is a film about ‘power’ and ideology of the high school. In the film Frederick Wiseman digs into the power relationships through the interactions between teachers/school administrators and students/their parents. In this way <High School> becomes discourse on another America in the 1960s as well as the filmmaker’s individual report on a high school.
