Annotation of Yi-Sang's poem “The Story of Ga-oe-ga”

시 「가외가전(街外街傳)」은 이상이 편집을 맡은 구인회의 동인지 『시와소설』(1936.3)에 발표된 것이다. 텍스트 자체의 난해함과 더불어, 이상 문학을 병적(病的)이거나 성적(性的)인 것으로 파악하고자 했던 이상 문학 연구의 한 경향 속에서 이 텍스트는 이상 문학 연구의 축적에도 불구하고 온전히 이해되지 못하였다. 이에 본고에서는 「가외가전」을 이루고 있는 서사가 다른 무엇을 은밀하게 비유하기 위해 마련된 것이 아니라, 이상 자신이 몸소 체험한 광희문(光熙門) 밖 신당리 빈민촌의 현실로부터 기인한다는 사실을 해명하고자 했다. 이 텍스트가 가리키고 있는 것은 경성의 바깥, 그리하여 가외가(‘街外街’)인 그곳 빈민촌의 적빈(赤貧)이었다. 이상은 그 가난의 땅에 이 세기의 곤비(困憊)와 살기(殺氣)가 바둑판처럼 넓게 깔리어 있다고 썼다. 문(門)을 통해 골목을 따라 성의 바깥으로 몰리는 것은 글자 그대로 ‘썩는 것들’이었다. 「가외가전」의 글쓰기를 통해 이상은 불어나는 쓰레기와 함께 내파(內破)되는 경성의 종말을 묵시하고 있었다. 이 난해한 텍스트를 통해, 그는 모더니즘적 기법의 한 극한을 실험하면서, 동시에 리얼리스트로서의 면모를 보여주고 있었던 것이다. 이처럼 「가외가전」은 근대 자본주의 체제와 식민 권력의 공간 정치에 대한 비판을 나름의 방식으로 밀어붙인 한 결과물이다.

The poem “The Story of Ga-oe-ga (街外街傳)” was published in Kuin-Heu’s (九人會) magazine “SiwaSoseol,” edited by Yi-Sang. Although the text is difficult to read, the poem has never been fully understood because of the tendency to view Yi-Sang’s literature as morbid or sexualized, despite continued study of his literature. The present study aimed to reveal that the text’s narrative was not intended to be a covert metaphor for something else, but rather stemmed from Yi-Sang’s experiences in the Sindang-ri slum outside Gwanghuimun. This text describes the poverty of the slums outside of Keijo (京城), the “road outside of the road.” It describes a landscape where garbage, filth, and other decaying things are thrown out of the castle’s gate. In “The Story of Ga-oe-ga,” Yi-Sang predicted that the city would eventually rot from garbage and come to an end. Thus, he exceptionally employed modernist techniques while also showing his realistic side. His poem thoroughly critiques the modern capitalist system and colonial spatial politics.
