Interactive fiction and storytelling incorporate two significant elements ofpopular media and games: interactivity and a story. Traditionally interactivefiction and storytelling was text-based, though it has evolved to sometimesinclude other media elements such as images, animation, and sound. Thedevelopment of interactive media is an involved process that requires carefulplanning and consideration of content, media, and audience. A script orstoryboard of some ilk is often the first document to be produced for aninteractive program. However a story with interactive elements is much morecomplex than a traditional linear story, so when developing an interactivestory it is also necessary to develop a scheme of organization for each partof the story and program. This scheme needs to work well enough that thepeople involved in producing the program can see how many elements arein each part of the overall program, and how they interrelate singularly. Like traditional story-telling, content is key. If a story is weak, the bestimagery, sound and special effects in the world will not make it better. Thereneeds to be a strong underlying narrative. Because interactive games dealwith fantasy and science fiction as well as realistic and historical settings,a vivid imagination coupled with the ability to research a topic thoroughlyis necessary.
