The Minjung Cultural Movement in 1970∼80’s and The Korean Cinema: focusing on Lee Jang-Ho’s Films

In 1980-90’ Lee Jang-Ho made his films under the influence ofMinjung cultural movement. He accepted the Lukácsian literal realism andthe satirical criticism of Madangguk but he tried to reach the certain kindof filmic realism with the authenticity of the film image. And he alsoused the humor and the satire to criticise the contradictions arisen in thecourse of the industrial modernization in Korea. He delt with the themesand subjects that related with the lives of Minjung like religion, poverty,sexuality, prostitution, death and illness, and the grief and the sorrow oftheir lives. He used the Korean traditional culture, like Tal-chum(traditionalkorean mask dance), Gut(korean traditional ritual of shamanism), andPansori(traditional korean folk-singing) as narrative motives and thematicsubjects. Lee tried to describe the life of Minjung authentically andretained the social criticism in his films in 1980’.
