Direction Analysis of '3 Idiots' as Bollywood Film style's Model

Through my direction analysis of <3 idiots>, I wish to study the power and the basic principle of Bollywood movie style. First of all, The film <3 Idiots> is a 2009 indian comedy film directed by Rajkumar Hirani. He adapted it from the novel 'Five point someone: What not to do llT' written by Chetan Bhagat. It made a box-office success in Indian film history. The film is a kind of 'Masala Movies'. In this thesis, I emphasized on direction analysis of <3 Idiots> as Bollywood film style's model. In general the characteristics of Bollywood movies are vicarious pleasure, and entertainment, also escape from reality and Masala. <3 idiots> depicted its characteristics very well in film narrative and image. The theme is 'Do What You Love', The main character(3 idiots) are Rancho, Farhan and Raju who expressed their personalities very strongly in the film. The film mixed up various genre such as comedy, melodrama, mystery and musical effectively. The film can give various pleasure to movie watchers. The plot used flashback. It contributed to the story well. The main plot is the strong desire for freedom and dreams, while the subplot is love between Rancho and Pia. They harmonized perfectly. Above all, I think the major cause of the '3 Idiots' success was the outstanding direction of its director: good adaptation, outstanding depiction of character, refined editing and good cinematography. Lastly the good working harmony between its staffs and actors also played an important part.
