Media laws in South Korea has been newly revised in 2009. As 3 media-related laws including Broadcasting Act, Newspaper Act, and Internet Multimedia Broadcasting Business Act (IPTV Act) have been passed through, the concept of broadcasting has been extended to the internet broadcasting, and the laws have been revised based on this new concept. Based on these new media-related laws, South Korea broadened the scope of the new media and strengthened copyright laws on 23rd Jul 2009 accordingly because these laws contained the concept of 'Internet'. As the number of specialists in TV programs including movies and dramas, and the properties with copyright, such as music, novels, and others, significantly increases, the number of users using them, violating copyright laws, also increases. New cases of copyright violation, such as illegal file sharing and original works copyright violation, are also increasing. This implies many users are violating copyright laws over the internet and original works protection has weakened. Thus, this study has surveyed and investigated the status of copyright laws in Korea through questionnaire surveys on how much the public are familiar with the newly revised media laws and copyright laws. In addition, this study dealt with whether Korean people are aware of the revised media laws and copyright laws in 2009 and whether or not they are violating those laws; and comparatively analyzed the parts of copyright laws that the public overlooked without knowing and the parts of copyright laws that the public do not know. In fact many people violate copyright laws in photos, videos, and sound source, using the internet at ordinary times. However, they overlooked their violation in most cases because copyright holders do not sue them for the infringement of copyright. Thus, many internet users do not recognize their regular copyright violation. To deal with how much the public are aware of the copyright of cinematographic works, this study has analyzed the questionnaires and investigated the weaknesses. The most important purpose of this study is to educate the public about the newly revised copyright laws and how they are violating the laws ignorantly; and to suggest the ways to improve the distribution channels for the creative works such as movies and media to prevent copyright infringement.
