This study analyzes the cinematic mode and spatiotemporal narrative of <Mist> in terms of modernism on the periphery. <Mist> has been evaluated as one of the most outstanding Korean modernist works which were influenced by the literary film boom and art cinema discourse during the 1960s. <Mist> examines adopting attitude with a self-conscious expression of modernism in a paradoxical way. It is important to note two major factors in <Mist>. One is the gaze of the main character and the other is the voice-over narration. They are vital means of building the space of Mujin, an imaginary place where the past and the present overlap. The male character of <Mist> desires to catch up with the mundane world but repetitively hesitates to adjusting himself to current times at the same time. <Mist> integrates this paradoxical attitude into its cinematic forms and represents the characteristics of a critical modernity.
