An Analysis on the User Experience of Smart Phone Movies

This paper is an analysis on the user experience of smart phone, focusing on the users that have watched movies by smart phones. The smart phone has become one of the most popular personal media devices; it has brought enormous changes in the way of individual media usages. It is not hard to predict that such changes could influence on the way of movie viewing. In this respect, we examine users’ needs, expectations and requirements for the movie viewing by smart phones. In this paper we want to discuss challenges and requirements in a comprehensive way, trying to shed light on all relevant aspects of the movie viewing by smart phones. Since the movie viewing by smart phones is a new way of watching movies, it is necessary to figure out the attributes of watching movies and the movie viewing by smart phones. We conduct user studies applying an intensive interview methodology to address user behaviors and characteristics. Also, this study employed the Q methodology to identify the subjective typology and the result are as follow: “Smart phone adopting viewers,” “Movie theater oriented viewers,” “Anti Smart phone using viewers,” “Multi media using viewers.” The 4 user groups have quite different needs and characteristics according their own categories. The aim of this paper is to give a good overview about the state of the art with the focus of users' need and experiences. The results are presented in the form of guidelines which highlight the characteristics of users, the system and service required including what content is interesting and the physical, temporal context in which it will be used. Both academia and industry can benefit from knowledge of these results when designing the further studies and development work concerning the user experience of the movie viewing by smart phones.
