본 연구는 여성의 경제활동 참여율이 출산율에 미치는 직접효과와 간접효과를 실증 분석한다. 이를 위해 2021년 227개(세종특별자치시 제외) 시군구자료를 이용하였으며, 급여와 혼인율을 매개변수로 설정하였다. 우선, 선행연구를 토대로 위에 언급한 선행변수(여성의 경제활동 참여율)와 매개변수(급여, 혼인율)와 출산율의 관계를 검토한 후, 연구모형 및 가설을 설정한다. 다음으로, 기술통계 및 매개효과 분석을 시행하며, 매개효과 분석은 부트스트랩 기법을 활용한다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 여성의 경제활동참여는 출산율에 직접적으로 양(+)의 유의미한 영향을 미치며, 급여에 음(-), 혼인율에 양(+)의 유의미한 영향을 주었다. 둘째, 급여는 독립변수로써 출산율에 유의미한 영향을 주지 않았으며, 이에 따라 여성의 경제활동 참여 → 급여 → 출산율의 경로는 존재하지 않았다. 셋째, 혼인율은 독립변수로써 출산율에 양(+)의 유의미한 영향을 주었으며, 이는 영성의 경제활동 참여가 혼인율을 매개로 출산율에 음(-)의 영향을 주었다는 것을 의미한다. 요약하면, 여성의 경제활동 참여 자체는 출산율을 높이지만, 혼인율을 낮추어 출산율에 부정적 영향을 준다. 본 연구의 결론에서는 정책적 시사점을 제시한다.

This study analyzes the direct and indirect effects of women's economic participation on fertility rates. To accomplish this, data from 227 municipalities (excluding Sejong Special Self-Governing City) in 2021 were utilized, with wages and marriage rates as mediators. Firstly, based on prior research, the importance of the aforementioned mediators (women's economic participation rate, wages, marriage rates) is presented. Next, the research model and hypotheses are established, followed by descriptive statistical analysis and mediation effect testing using the bootstrap technique in a structural equation modeling framework. The results of this study are as follows: Firstly, women's economic participation has a direct positive significant impact on fertility rates, while wages have a negative impact and marriage rates have a positive impact. Secondly, wages do not have a significant direct influence on fertility rates, thus the path of women's economic participation → wages → fertility rates is not confirmed. Thirdly, marriage rates have a positive significant impact as an independent variable on fertility rates, indicating that women's economic participation indirectly influences fertility rates through the mediation of marriage rates. In summary, women's economic participation itself increases fertility rates, but it has a negative impact on fertility rates by lowering marriage
