New Cold War Between China and the United States: Korea’s Design to Keep Its Democratic National Identity

중국이 미국 주도의 자유민주주의-시장경제를 존중하는 단일 세계질서 구축노력에 도전하면서 세계질서는 신냉전 시대로 접어들고 있다. 이에 따라 한국 등 중국 주변의 국가들은 안보 위협을 받고 있다. 중국의 위협을 억지하면서 한국이 자유민주주의 국가 정체성을 지켜나가려면 같은 이념을 공유하고 있는 미국, 일본과의 안보협력체제를 구축하여야 한다. 최근 미국 캠프 데이비드에서 한국은 미국과 일본과의 긴밀한 안보협력체제를 구축하기로 합의하였다. 윤석열 정부는 ‘유럽연합(EU)’을 구성하고 있는 유럽의 민주 국가들과의 협력관계를 심화시키고 있으며 인도·태평양 경제프레임워크(IPEF)에도 적극적으로 참여하려 한다. 10대 세계질서 주도국 중 하나로 올라선 한국은 민주 국가들의 협력으로 평화로운 세계질서를 만들려는 미국의 계획에 더 적극적으로 참여하여야 한다.

China with support of Russia is challenging U.S. hegemony to build a rule-based world community of nations of free-market democracy. The New Cold War threatens the security of democratic nations like Korea which sits on the hedge that surrounds China. To deter China’s threat, Korea is strengthening security ties with the United States and Japan. Recently the three nations signed at Camp David an agreement for close security cooperation. The Yoon Suk-Yol government is also expanding ties with European states, and will actively participate in Indo-Pacific Economic Framework. As one of the 10 Global Pivot States, Korea should and will actively play greater roles to support the U.S. effort to create a democratic, peaceful world order.
