충청북도 동부지역 청동기시대 문화의 맥락적 이해

Contextual Approaches to the Bronze Age Culture of Eastern Chungbuk Province

면적으로 보자면, 동부지역은 충청북도의 절반을 넘게 차지한다. 문화적 특성에 초점을 맞춘 고고학적 지역연구가 이루어질 만한 공간이다. 그런데 청동기시대에 관한 한 그렇지 못했다. 근본적으로는 유적 수가 적어 문화양상이 미약하다고 판단되었기 때문인 듯하다. 그러함에도 불구하고, 충청북도 동부지역의 청동기시대 문화상은 고고학 연구자에게 몇 가지 문제에 대한 심각한 이론적 논의를 촉발하기에 충분해 보인다. 유적, 특히 중기유적의 미약함이나 복잡한 문화유형 간 관계, 갈래를 달리하는 요소―분묘와 취락― 간 부조화 등의 문제는 좀 더 종합적이고 개연적인 설명이 필요하기 때문이다. 본고는 해당 지역의 자연·문화적 환경에 대한 분석과 대안적 모형에 기초하여 그런 문제들에 대한 맥락적 이해를 시도한다. 그리하여 열악한 토양환경과 산악지형이 점유의 미약을 초래했으며, 계통론에 대한 집착이 고고학적 실상을 역동적으로 설명하지 못하게 하고 있고, 고립적 환경이 위세품의 집중을 유도한 부장을 유발했다는 설명에 도달하게 된다.

In areal term, its eastern part exceeds the half of Chungbuk (North Chuncheong) Province. It is worthy to trying area studies for the archaeological culture of the region. However, Bronze Age culture of the region has not been the subject of that research. The scarcity of archaeological records seems attributed to the current situation. Nevertheless, Bronze Age culture of the eastern Chungbuk Province is enough to bring up several serious questions to the archaeologists. Rarity of Middle Bronze Age settlement, complicated relationship among archaeological assemblages, and incompatibility between different lines of data―for example, burial and settlement― require comprehensive and plausible explanation. Based on analyzing natural and cultural circumstance and alternative model, I attempt contextual understandings on the questions. Eventually, I can reach conclusions that mountainous landforms and bad soil condition were attributable to the scarce occupation, adhering to the genealogical perspectives prevent dynamic explanation about archaeological reality, and geomorphological barriers brought about the concentration of prestige goods to a single burial.
