What leads amateurs to produce short films? From 2008 the organizers of Shim Hyungrae fan community have produced 4 digital shorts films, and displayed them in the community's homepage. Drawing on participant observation and interviews, this article explores the meaning of this activity. Most of the participants are not experts; they are amateurs. Thus, in order to participate, the amateurs must have practical objectives. Both as a leader group of the fan community and as an individual, the participants have diverse and often conflicting objectives, which eventually shape the form and the content of their films. Even though it is undeniable that amateurs participate in various kinds of production activity, the specific process has not been deeply explored. By explaining the driving force behind the film production practice, this essay discloses determining factors that enable the amateurs to participate in the film production activity.
