Study on 'Body-Face-Space' Images: <La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc>

This study's aim is to analyse <La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc>, as the representative text in the level of esthetic image effects composed of the face close up shots, the articulated body images and the frame inner space articulation. This aim is carried out by the image analysis in the visual sign system using semiological methodology. And this study was motivated by the power of attraction regarding very exquisitly constructed space mise-en-scene. Above all the detail image representation, the face close up shots and the articulated body images are the main images through the text which compress the usual narrative. That shows the trace of the premier film texts composed of tableau style narrative. Especially the variable figures of face close up shots of Jeanne d'Arc (Faconetti) reveal profound esthetic as well as meangful visual signification; in other words that signifies human being's inside existence which has eyes of photogenic level. On the enonciation of images expression, the articulated body images of judges are related to travelling movement of camera and that makes their present existence held down by a repressive absent upper space in the frame.
