A Study on the Korean Film Protection Policy in Screening and Distribution

Korean has developed her film industry by using aggressive film protection policy since 1945. Especially, Korea had used various film protection policy tools in film import, screening and distribution until 1984. However, as Korean government had chosen market opening policy during 1980s, Korean film policy has been changed from protection to liberalization. In 1984, Korea had removed the regulation of film import and alleviated the restriction on screening and distribution. In 2006, Korea has finally alleviated the screen quota. In this paper, I attempted to evaluate Korean film protection policy and find new strategy of the film industry protection by investigating Korean film protection policy in screening and distribution. The results showed that Korean film protection policy was very successful and effective for the development of Korean film industry. Korean government has used various regulation policies including import, screening and distribution. Korean government would like to reduce the sideeffect on film industry by removing these regulation gradually. However, there has been several tasks for Korean film industry. Korean film industry should be globalized especially in screening and distribution areas. Furthermore, the supporting policy would be more important for the development of Korean film industry rather than the protection policy.
