The Online Movie Ratings and Box Office Performances between Korea and U.S.: Hollywood Films in Korea during 2007~008

This Study is on the determinants of financial performances of Hollywood movies in the U.S. domestic market and foreign market such as Korea. For study, we collect the variables for 179 Hollywood films that were released in Korea during 2007~2008. The two markets are highly related with each other. However, Variables that are related with the box office performance in the two markets are significantly different. Opening weekend revenue, IMDB User rating, Oscar, numbers of Opening weekend screens are the key variables of box office performance in U.S. market. In Korea, the numbers of opening weekend screens in Seoul, NAVER movie ratings, Korean MPPA ratings, seasonality are key variables for Hollywood movies’ box office performance in Korean market. For Word of Mouth (WOM) Effects, this study uses the IMDB movie ratings for U.S. market and NAVER Movie ratings for Korean market. while the study finds that online Word of Mouth effect of IMDB movie ratings on box office performance of Hollywood movies in U.S. Market, there is no evident that NAVER movie ratings is the good predictor for box office performance in Korea. For Further study, research could focus on relationship Between NAVER ratings as a Word of Mouth and Korean movies' box office performances. the sequential study on WOM and Korean movies' box office performances is worth while.
