This paper firstly suggests a clear list of movie theaters during the colonial period through examining the preserved material and discovering new ones. According to the list, I explain changes in the institute of cinema from the silent film days to the last years of Japanese domination, focusing on the development of the movie theater system. The institute of cinema in Korea was reorganized by the rule of the colonial Japanese government since 1910. The colonial Japanese authorities basically followed the national film policy of Japanese interior Ministry and the currents of Japanese film industry directly influenced film market in Korea which established producing and distributing system through Japan. Theaters of the early silent film days specialized gradually into regular movie theaters and they were developed into the separated theaters by nation-language since the Byeonsa(film interpreter) system got settled. But the induction of a talkie system hastened the combination of the new technology and Japanese film majors that made Korean audience absorbed into Japanese movie theater. Consequently, Korean film industry was nationalized by Chosen film regulation in 1940, which resulted in the government managed theater. In conclusion, I point out movie theater during the colonial period had been changed complicatedly, connected to the colonial governmental system and the capital changes, as the 36-year colonial period never had been consistent.
