Recognition of Korean Society through 'Colonial Times': focusing on <Blue Swallow> & <Epitaph>

To understand Korean Modern society, analyse korean popular film which represent Japanese military occupied period in this paper. It is not only the context of the films, but the way of communicate with spectators also. Koean society had changed into normal state from military government Civil Revolution in June 1987. After 1997 IMF Crisis, by the way, the discourse of Korean society was changed into globalization & economics from democracy. The meaning of this changes were to recover 'state' and 'nationalism'. <Blue Swallow> in 2005 had different perspective from other films which represented Japanese military occupied period. It is the main point of this film. The film tried to avoid a dichotomized perspective for Japanese military occupied period that Japanese military vs. korean people. Park Kyong won, the heroin of <Blue Swallow>, was pro-Japanese female pilot and the most of Korean concerned about her political behaviors. But the film focused on her personal ambition. She, even though, got disturbance by Korean activists for Korean independent, to get her personal ambition fly. It is a point of this film. <Epitaph> has to get character who did not concerned about difficulty of 'state'. All korean characters got cared about personal ambition & the failures, also. The film showd the mixture of conservative & progressive in korean society. The box - office of two films shows, and, showd the main discourse of 21st Korea are nationalism and state either. A popular film is the political apparatus. <Blue Swallow> & <Epitaph> are needed to read through political & cultural way.
