The Star Power of Korean Movie Industry 2003～2007

This Study investigates the Star power of Korean Movies. The sample consists of 421 films released during 2003-2007. During the period, 204 directors made only one film each. 63 directors made 147 movies. 43 actors and actress played main roles for 263 movies. Median numbers of audience are 424,514, average numbers of audience are 986,757.44, and the mode is 424,514. The regression results indicate the Power of Stars in the Korean film Industry between 2003 and 2007. Seventeen individual actors, two actresses and three directors have the star power. However, unlike the previous research in 1998, the Star power is not stronger than prior research. While prior study shows that star brings 30,000 people more than movies without star in Theater. In this study, the movie with Star gets 240.54 audiences than movie without Star. The Key Factor of this difference comes from the Treatment of the dependent variable. Korean Movies Revenue distribution is similar to the distribution of American movie industry. In this distribution, the probability of an extreme outcomes is much higher and has heavier tailed and Higher skewed than normal distribution.
