Disjunctive Order and Reflexivity of Film

This paper aims to establish a theory that can explain specific film images through consideration of the concept of reflexivity. It presents the problem by taking the images that appear in Im Kwon-Taek’s Chihwaseon and Beyond the Years as the starting point of theoretical description. In other words, these refer to images that intervene in the narrative continuity, show the construction of the author subject, and thus capture the moment when the meaning of author subject becomes duplicative and paradoxical. In system-theoretical terminology, they can be expressed as a kind of disjunctive order. The images of this form are actually meaningless when seen from the viewpoint of narratology and information theory, but in this paper, they are viewed as points where new features of the subject appear. Such appearances can be explained focusing on the concept called reflexivity. Reflexivity is the result of skepticism on the subject of simple modernity, but on the other hand, it is a concept which can be used to criticize and supplement the problems in the model of enlightenment modernity. In image aesthetics, a model of modernity refers to a structure that can produce a situation in which the narrator has specific authorities but, at the same time, is also concealing himself or herself. A reflexive figure, however, presents such subject or author simultaneously with the object he or she is representing. Therefore, it is distinctive in that it shows author subject composition and work production.
