Analysis of the Cinematic Styles of Sorum with the Analysis of Unconventional Editing Techniques

Films have the ability to elicit both the support of the spectator as well as gaining criticism from its audience. It can be looked at as a blessing for the filmmaker. The goal of the filmmaker is to balance the artistic and creative impulses, and never taking for granted the views of the spectator. The dilemma of the director or filmmaker rests in creating a film that must work within the parameters of the existing “genre” and his own artistic sensibilities that may challenge the existing conventions. This research hopes to find the relationships between the film Sorum and the 'horror' film genre with in the techniques of directing and editing, and the artistic intention of the filmmaker. The methodology of this research, is based on analyzing the editing techniques of Sorum, and the research progressed into three areas, narrative analysis, the similarity and difference with the genre style, and the visual style. The most distinguishing point within the narrative structure, editing technique and the style of Sorum, is the 'Casting off in unconventional ways'. As well as the establishment of a unique narrative structure through the unconventional editing technique and limited information. In Sorum the filmmaker keeps asking the questions and points out the questions in the first half of the film. The filmmaker intentionally does not present an immediate nor conventional answer about the various questions and doubts. It is not until the second half of the film that we can see the structure of the complete story. This narrative structure has a uniqueness that the filmmaker creates through a conventional story structure called 'appearance' and 'magic bullet' of the event, and its parts divided within the movie that is very different to the conventions of the 'horror' genre films. Even though this style of editing technique is important it can also be described as being almost obsessive. It is through the filmmaker's unconventional style in the visual and sound strategies and skills in directing and editing, within the conventions of 'horror' genre, that the filmmaker has found a unique and new way of creating a film in the 'horror' genre in Korea.
