한국영화34.jpg

Anna May Wong(1905~1961) is one of a few Asian stars who enjoyed the international fame while appearing in Hollywood films during the 1920s and the 1930s. As a Chinese-American actress her life, career and movies recently draw scholarly as well as popular attention followed by the publication of academic articles and biographies and production of a documentary film. Such intellectual interests in the representation of gender, race and ethnicity in her Hollywood and European films reconsider orientalism and the racial politics within American society and Hollywood and tackle the current issues of identity formation of Asian American women. In light of such critical concerns this paper examines how Wong presents and negotiates her ethnicity in constructing her stardom which historically and politically involves American racism, European exoticism, orientalist representation in Hollywood movies and the gender politics of 'new woman' of the period.
