Flashbacks and Inner Voices in Five Marines (1961): Narrative Strategy and Style

This paper begins with a question which arose when I saw Five Marines; Why do the flashbacks and inner voices in that movie seem to be inconsistent? To solve this question, I set a rule forth as a premise. The rule is that a narrative text is made for the purpose of achieve its aim and the narrative elaborate a strategy for the aim. What is come from the practice into which the narrative put the strategy is style. Five Marines aims at two goals at the same time. One is dealing with Marine heroes, and the other is dealing with the true picture of the Marines with various persons. The narrative strategy is devised like these: The plot unfolds along this process; individuals with their own characteristic→integration into the group(the Marines)→depiction of Marine heroes: The characters are divided into two groups; one for identification, and the other is for distance. According to the narrative strategy, the style of flashbacks and inner voices in this movie is analyzed. The flashbacks and inner voices in this movie shows the characteristic of the individuals, so they appeared only before the integration into 'five marines': The subject of flashbacks and the type of inner voices become different in accordance with the character groups: The authority for flashback and inner voice is different according to the character's function and the extent of importance. In short, the style of flashbacks and inner voices doesn't seem to be coherent, but it is NOT incoherent. It is complicated instead and we can find elaborateness and delicacy in that complication.
