The modulation transfer function (MTF) of motion picture film was compared to that of HDCAM camera. On the film side, the various steps from camera negative to print film are added using published documents from Kodak. On the HDCAM side, a study from Sony Corp. was consulted. The result of the comparison agrees with the previous study. HDCAM showed much better response at lower spatial frequencies, and film showed much better response at higher frequencies. The present study, however, gave a little better result for film than the previous one. In view of the technical complexity regarding MTF, the author also tried to explain the basic concepts in some detail for general film students. Particularly, the concept of “TV line” was clarified since errors are frequently found even in professional publications. The problem appears to stem from confusion of sampling frequency and image frequency.
